Nobody really knows what kind of magic the Ancient and Strangers used, most scholars assume it was the Song. Not much is known of the Strangers, but in the Ancient's case most Thaumaturges believe the Ancients were extremely intelligent, wise and long-lived that they had the time (and the brainpower) to decode the Song and translate it into the Rule. Making them the only living beings to be able to comprehend the Song and the Rule at the same time.

(The only reason they aren't actively revered even now was that the Ancients themselves worked hard at keeping a low profile, since they didn't particularly want to have to live up to being gods when they saw themselves as being something more like sufficiently advanced aliens)

As for ghosts, they come in all shapes and sizes. Memories of traumatic events (like the ghosts Larina sees in Rune), vengeful ghosts, sad ghosts but also ghosts that are happy to just hang around and help the living out. They're mostly the "spirits not ready to move on" variety, and they have a lot of different reasons to stay where they are.
